The supplement aisle is full of bold claims. The good news: the truth is usually printed on the back of the bottle, if you know where to look.
1. Read the Supplement Facts panel, not the front label
The front of a bottle is marketing. The Supplement Facts panel on the back is where the actual amounts per serving are listed. Check the serving size too. A product might advertise a big number that only adds up if you take three or four capsules.
2. Look for the active amount
With fish oil, for example, what matters is the amount of EPA and DHA, the omega-3s that have been studied. A capsule labeled "1,000mg fish oil" may contain far less EPA and DHA than that. The same idea applies to extracts like berberine: look for the purity and the amount of the active compound.
3. Watch out for proprietary blends
A "proprietary blend" lists ingredients without telling you how much of each is inside. That makes it impossible to know whether you're getting a meaningful dose. Fully disclosed formulas list every ingredient with its exact amount.
4. Ask about testing
Quality brands test their products with independent, third-party labs for identity, potency and contaminants like heavy metals and microbes. It's also worth knowing where a product is made. Facilities certified to standards like NSF/ANSI 455-2 are audited for good manufacturing practices.
